User Research

Methods

CARD SORT

The card sort method is used to label certain application functions, features, attributes, and allow the users to organize the cards in a way that makes most sense for them to use. This allows us designers to understand which functions, features, and attributes certain users prefer or use in an application in order to make it a successful use for them.

COLLAGE

The purpose of this method is to get an idea of what the users are feeling or thinking about or associate items with when they interact with the original application. The images could be random stock images, with no meaningful connection to one another. When the user selects the images and creates a collage, it allows the designers to understand and visualize the user’s perspectives or understandings around certain issues or complex ideas from the application. The user would then explain the significance of the photos and associate it with the problems to help designers come up with solutions or ideas.

INTERVIEW

This method tracks what a user does when they are using an existing product. By listing the user’s inputs and decisions, we can determine where the product falls short in the user’s goals. This allows us to design a solution that addresses these demands.
This method allows us to figure out how users interact with the only existing application that allows them to build a schedule.

Findings

Persona + Journey Map

Based off the information gathered during the research stage, we created a persona, Helen Spicer. We mapped out her personality and habits. Then we expanded into creating a journey map based off our research participants' experiences using sites like Wolverine Access, Atlas, and the LSA Course Guide.
